在六零年代，迷幻音乐有着两个不同的源头。一个是在美国的西海岸，集中在旧金山，洛衫矶等地，另一个则在英国。虽然它们都被称为迷幻音乐，但实质上它们的音乐风格不尽相同：在美国西海岸的迷幻音乐受民谣摇滚和传统布鲁斯影响较深，而在英国的迷幻音乐更具实验的色彩。
在美国的迷幻摇滚乐队之中，最具有代表性的要数Jefferson Airplane和Grateful Dead。
Jefferson Airplane成立于1965年，领军人物是Marty Balin。当时他们一共有六个人，活跃在旧金山的一家俱乐部。1966年他们推出了第一张专辑《Jefferson Airplane Takes Off》，但销量只属一般。
直到Jefferson Airplane找来了一位女歌手Grace Slick，并在1967年2月参加了金门公园的海特阿伯莱音乐会，他们才在众多的乐队中脱颖而出，以独特的音乐风格和气质吸引了众多的乐迷，迅速成为嬉皮的代言人。
之后，乐队得到了唱片公司的赏识，并迅速录制了第二张专辑《Surrealistic Pillow》（翻译成中文是“超现实主义枕头”，迷幻风格可见一斑……）。这张专辑是Jefferson Airplane最为重要的一张专辑，可以说是美国西海岸迷幻摇滚的里程碑。
在这张专辑里，充满着爱与和平的嬉皮精神，对毒品毫不掩饰的赞美与体验。前者如乐队脍炙人口的“Somebody to love”，热情洋溢地号召大家去爱；后者如直接表现吸毒后体验的“White Rabbit”，因为White Rabbit是《爱丽斯漫游梦境》里面引导爱丽斯游历幻境的小动物，这是暗喻着毒品。风格上，乐队把布鲁斯与电子实验音乐相结合，营造出奇妙的迷幻气氛，并且大大拓展和丰富各种电子乐器的表现力。在“3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds”里，这种奇妙的结合表现的淋漓尽致，不得不佩服他们的想象力和创造力。
同年夏天“爱之夏”音乐节上，大批嬉皮乐迷聚集在一起，“Somebody to love”和“White Rabbit”成为他们的集体共鸣，一遍一遍地被传诵、吟唱着，而Balin和Slick也大声地对乐迷们呼吁：“让我们走到一起，加入这个充满微笑和爱地行列！”一时间，“Jefferson Airplane Love You”的标识，成为了一个独特的风景，伴随着Jefferson Airplane的歌迷，走遍各个地方。
其后，乐队还陆续推出了一些专辑，包括同年的《Atrer Bathing at Baxter》、1968年的《Crown of Creation》、1969年的《Volunteers》和《Bless Ites Pointed Little Head》，但是在1970年，乐队成员陆续离开，连最初的创始人Marty Balin也离开了，只剩下吉他手Paul Kantner。乐队在七十年代末开始向Hardcore方向发展，并更名为Jefferson Starship。当然，这已经不能与Jefferson Airplane相提并论了。
1989年Marty Balin回来重组了Starship，录制了《Jefferson Airplane》。到了1995年，要组成了新的Starship，录制了《Deep Space/Virgin Sky》。
