Differences between a University and a Research Institute of the CAS

People participating in the National Postgraduate Examination frequently had to decide whether they would prefer to take his/her master’s or doctor’s degree at a university or a research institute of the CAS. When I was an undergraduate, I had ever been confronted with such a perplexity. I did not know which I should select to pursue my advanced studies. By comparison, a university needed a great amount of tuition fees, thus studying at an research institute perhaps would be a reality to me in the case of taking my terrible financial conditions into consideration. To be on the safe side, I consulted with some of my classmates, hardly anyone can positively enjoy studying in a university, of course, with the exception of recommended admission.

In my opinion, this result lied in several reasons. In the first place, many students including me could not afford the high tuition fees of a university for three years, whereas an institute not only needed little but also could provide you with quite a number of allowances each month. Secondly, the CAS was in the possession of a good many of excellent scientists in their corresponding fields in China. As was well known, a good tutor took an important role in one’s advanced studies. The prospective student did not have to spend too much time selecting and contacting his/her tutor. Thus he/she could save a good deal of precious time so as to prepare for the examination, since the majority of the researchers at an institute were extremely possible to be leading experts in their corresponding research fields. What was more, funds for scientific research were ample, which greatly appealed to many undergraduates who held various novel thoughts and strived after their realization. Ultimately, a good job perhaps was the most important influence factor which was taken into consideration primarily, because a CAS’ diploma was generally favorable to one’s prospect of employment.

These differences, however, ultimately proved only my illusions of a kind, especially since I had returned from Xiamen University. By now I had gotten rid of the great majority of my previous prejudices against universities. Institutes had the reputation for their thick scientific research atmosphere, whereas held the disadvantages of lacking cultural and artistic atmosphere  which a university could transcend. For example, when I came to the SIOC of the CAS for the first time, it did not give me very deep impressions. Although I was attracted by the noise of exhaling fans and the bustle of the workers and students experimenting at this institute; depression, rigidity and being shortage of vitality were the first impressions the SIOC made on me. Indeed, the SIOC had a nationwide reputation for a good number of major achievements in many areas of organic chemistry, and thus as the research centre of organic chemistry in China. However, it lacked a sort of intangible atmosphere, which I felt immediately after my entrance to this institute but was not capable of expressing clearly then. As I was strolling around on the campus of Xiamen University,I eventually knew what was short of in the SIOC.

A university could be compared to a melting-pot, rightly as the American of United States that was consisted of local Indians, Africans, European white people, Asians and Hispanics who had created and were creating American culture through the interaction and the sequent integration of their customs and cultures.Every nationality developed and meeted corresponding succeed in virtue of these integration. Scientific research was a similar story. Scientific research atmosphere was only part of the mixture in the melting-pot. Additionally, cultural and artistic atmosphere was of greater significance, since the prerequisites for the growth of a qualified scientist were the cultivation of humanity and the development of soul and spirit. Many well-known organic chemists in the world, such as two celebrated professors of Harward University, Robert B. Woodward and Elias J. Corey, of which the former was awarded the Nobel chemistry Prize in 1965 for his remarkable accomplishment of developing the art and science of organic synthesis, while the latter won the same prize in 1990 for his contribution to the establishment and development of the theory and methodology of organic synthesis, graduated from and did their researches at a university instead of an institute. Few things could be more agreeable and beneficial than a cultural lecture. Did you like Yi Zhongtian? As a professor of Xiamen University, he had ever told the stories about “Three Empires” in the CCTV. His strict logics, detailed and accurate analyses of historic facts and occasional humorous narratives had attracted a great number of audiences, including me and one of my classmates in high school. As a prospective graduate of Xiamen University, I thought that living and studying at a university having many celebrities in every field of the humanities would be more valuable and interesting, and bound to bring about more to me, compared with the monotonous living in an institute.

Such feeling was even deepened by my experience of working as a casual worker at the Institute of Soil Science of the CAS. At this institute, the whole work you were able to do was eating and drinking, sleeping, experimenting and net surfing—virtually the only form of entertainment. Moreover, it looked as if most graduates at the institute had been idling away their time, for the majority of them studied and worked only when they were at the work time, spanning seven hours a day or even less. While in their spare time they frequently surfed the net for something trivial or watched a latest film by utilizing their computers. Through their behavior, I was not able to find any favorable performance and due qualities that a qualified graduate should possess.

Another handicap that an institute had was that the majority of tutors at an institute seldom adopted their students’ thoughts on the experiments, even though they may be very creative. By comparison, a university’s tutor frequently encouraged their students to put forward their own thoughts and programs in stead of following the ways of predecessors. I had ever read an article in the net, the author, a graduate of the SIOC, said that he always had to verify the thoughts put forward by his tutor in stead of his own, and his tutor always gave him the same excuse for why he did not allow the author to experiment on his own thoughts—it would be a waste of time, money and effort. Another story about one of my schoolmates studying at a university was entirely different. When she put forward a reasonable and creative thought on her experiment, her tutor always complimented her on it and encouraged her to experiment on it so as to realize it. I never wish to be a student of the former tutor, in that case, a great number of creative thoughts of mine would be killed when they were still in embryo.

If you can do without these allowances allocated to you each month—a little more but relatively insignificant, you will find a university could provide you with the best that life could offer. In addition to the cultural and artistic atmosphere, you never had to try to look for entertainment facilities. A university invariably offered her students with a wide variety of amusements such as gymnasia, swimming pools, basketball fields and football fields, in which an institute was extremely deficient. You also may meet a wide variety of interesting people on the campus. Few things could be more impressive than the feelings that you had when you encountered a person appreciated by you, especially if he/she was a foreigner, you may practice your spoken English with him/her. Moreover, there were many opportunities for studying abroad, for which an institute could not match. If you wish to take a degree of doctor overseas, as long as all the indispensable materials were well prepared, the university would assist you with the application for the admission to a well-known foreign university.
